Once more Kingston proved to be a great area for sailing, four racing days, fantastic winds, great race management and CORK week had the Solings back in their waters for their 50th Anniversary and 2019 Soling North American Championship where 4 nationalities took part at the event; Three sailors sailing were also sailing in the first edition of the CORK week and even one event before for the Dragon trials. Bill Abbott, Peter Hall & John Vines.
Today the two last races of the championship were held, total of 10 races with 5 boats taking bullets. NED 33 was on fire finding every little shift, always a bit to the left, in the nice 12 to 15 knot breeze, sun and champagne sailing, today without the late storm showers to mess up with clothes and also the boat packing after race. CAN 1 Bill Abbott, Paul Davis and Joanne Abbott despite all their attempts, couldn't damage the Dutch confidence who keep sailing at the front leading the pack no matter the circumstances. CAN 225 Peter Hall, William Hall and Scott McNeil did sail well but placed two thirds to consolidate the podium.
CAN 236 with Bill Haliburton, Terry Booth and Bryan Milne were the winners of the red fleet, taking home the Van Dyke trophy forgotten at home by super crazy Dave who had updated it with all new all plaques made of sterling silver which will last for another ten years. This was thanks to the generous help of Charlie Kamps & Henry Thomas. It was the first time in history a North American Championship is won by a European team, the Dutch names to be engraved in the nicest Trophy in NA for the Soling class.
Next NA event to be hosted in Annapolis at the Severn Sailing Association around April/May next 2020, forecasting the Worlds that will be hosted by the Milwaukee Yacht Club.
2018 US Championship report by Andy Dize
The 2018 US Championship was contested by a group of 12 competitive Soling sailors from as far away as Nova Scotia, Milwaukee, and Germany.
The weather in Annapolis in the spring can be quite unpredictable as most of you know but due to a huge high-pressure system, the weather turned out to be perfect for the first 2 days of the event with summer-like temperatures in the upper 70’s and southerly breezes.
It was enough for a number of Canadian crews to break out shorts! Peter Hall in CAN 225 showing no slowing from his past ankle injury negotiated the 3 races held on Day 1 to take a commanding lead with 3 bullets but due to the consistency of John Finch & Gordy Devries CAN 210 and Tom Freeman CAN 233, there was still plenty of racing to be had to challenge for the Championship.
Day 2 again greeted the fleet again with 70+ degree temperatures, however, the results of Day 1 were not to be repeated. Race 4 again saw Peter move out again to record the win. Race 5 was a game changer as the southerly breeze decided to die to nothing on the left side of the course leaving Andy Dize USA 798 and Peter hung out to dry to watch the mid and right side course boats moving smartly to the weather mark on the incoming wind. Congrats to Tom Mitchell CAN 227 for putting together a great race for the win! Stu Walker USA 839 who also gladly took advantage of the right side wind rounded the weather mark second. Peter was able to claw back to an 8th place finish which pulled the leading boats point totals closer together. For race 6 with the wind back to a steady southerly direction and velocity (14-17 knots), the fleet enjoyed a near perfect 5 leg windward-leeward race. Peter was back to his form and handily won with Michael Dietzel GER 11 finishing second, and US 798 in with a respectable third.
Day 3 as forecasted slapped the competitors all back to reality that it was still spring and not summer! Easterly wind at 12 – 18 knots and 52 degrees quickly made us all forget the near perfect weather of the prior 2 days. The racing was still close and competitive for the final 2 races however Peter Hall’s march to another US Championship was not to be denied as he won both races. CAN 210 and CAN 233 held on for their respective 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the regatta.
In addition to the excellent racing, there was no lack of good spirits on shore after each day of racing. At the awards ceremony, all competitors joined in with a raucous chorus of happy birthday for our elder statesman, soon to be 95 years old, Stuart Walker. Even with diminished eyesight and a variety of wind conditions, Stu started and finished every race. Cheers to Stuart!

2015 North Americans Wrapup
Two weeks ago 18 teams from the US, Canada and Germany descended upon beautiful Wilmette to compete for the title of Soling North American Champions.
The Sheridan Shore Yacht Club together with John Kennedy and team hosted a fantastic event filled with fun social gatherings, good food, great local beer and entertainment.
The Soling family struggled to make the best of the frustrating light wind condones but over the four day event only managed 4 races, one short of the required five races to constitute a Championship.
Congratulations to Canada's team Hall for their victory in the 2015 Wilmette Open!
Results are below, looking forward to seeing everyone on the water soon,
It's time to start some serious planning for this year's Canadian Soling Championships scheduled Aug 23,24 in Etobicoke.
Our 2014 National Championship event being held as part of the Etobicoke Yacht Club Levels Regatta is guaranteed to be good fun with the experience of sailing in Humber Bay under the Toronto skyline not one soon forgotten!
Boats are now committed from Toronto, Port Stanley and US fleets will make for a competitive fleet and exciting racing.

Congratulations to Thomas Fogh, Roger Cheer, Gord Devries on their recent Ontario Championship victory. We are happy to see Thomas carry on Hans's legacy racing Solings!
Seven teams from fleets in Toronto and Port Stanley took part in the DYC regatta June 7th and 8th in Port Dalhousie Ontario. Although we had two days with little wind, racers enjoyed great, competitive sailing. The Dalhousie Yacht Club is idealy situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario near Niagara on the Lake, only an hour or two from both of the major Soling Fleets. Competitors enjoyed social events including a steak dinner, and Painkiller™ Party on Saturday evening.
Many t
hanks to Dalhousie Yacht Club and members for hosting an enjoyable regatta! Congratulations to all sailors.

A Great Start!!
Canadian Soling racing got off to a great start last weekend in Port Stanley with the Donker Memorial. Six boats saw a variety of very good sailing conditions over the two day event with Sundays 15-18 knot SW breeze providing some excellent surfing conditions.
Junior sailors, and hopefully future Soling skippers Marlee and Maria did a fantastic job crewing for Tom Michell who has joined our group this season. Long time Soling crew, Gord Devries made the trip to Port Stanley to sail with CAN 96 and share some go fast secrets. Racing was very close through the fleet with many positions only decided in the last race. Congrats to all of the competitors
Looking forward to Ontario Champs June 7,8
